Event Details

On May 21st at GSVlabs in Redwood City, CA, the County of San Mateo will be hosting our second annual hackathon, Hack-SMC. Developers, engineers, entrepreneurs, students, techies, activists, designers and citizens of San Mateo County (and the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area) will participate in an all-day competition to use open data and technology to create web and mobile apps that improve our communities.

Winners at Hack-SMC 2016 may be invited to participate in our first Apps Challenge to compete for a $5,000 Grand Prize*. Apps Challenge participants will have from May-September* to further develop and refine their winning Hack-SMC project, consult with County departments/partners, and present a working app/website to the Apps Challenge judges.

  • Top Prize: $1,500 (5 available)
    • Winners of a $1,500 top prize may be invited to compete for a $5,000 Grand Prize* at the Apps Challenge, tentatively scheduled for September 2016.
  • Honorable Mention: $250 (3 available)
  • Door prizes will be awarded throughout the event

*: The prize amounts listed in event materials, including the event website, are based on then-current pledges of donations, and no prize amounts are guaranteed at any level until final prize awards are given via check (which will occur after the Event). In order to receive any cash prizes, each qualifying participant must complete additional tax-related paperwork (I.R.S. Form W-9). Participants cannot receive payment without completing this paperwork but are welcome to participate without completing this paperwork if they wish not to receive a cash prize. Any person winning over $600 in prizes at Hack-SMC will receive an IRS form 1099 at the end of the calendar year and a copy of such form will be filed with the IRS. Each winner must provide valid identification and a valid taxpayer identification number or social security number before any prize will be awarded.

We encourage you to form a team prior to the event (and make sure your teammates register!) or come prepared to work alone. We can’t guarantee that you will be able to form a team at the event.

Judging Criteria

  • How useful is the app or concept?
    • Will it have a positive impact on San Mateo County residents, businesses, or visitors?
  • Is the app or concept usable?
    • How intuitive or easy to use is the app or concept?
  • Does the app or concept use at least one San Mateo County dataset or did the team create a new dataset?
  • How original is the app or concept?
    • Does it provide an innovative or creative approach to an idea?
  • Does the app or concept utilize appropriate technology?
    • Can the app be used on a variety of platforms? Does the target audience have access to these platforms?
